Demolishing and rebuilding the cabinets

The first step in renovating your kitchen cabinets is to demolish the old cabinets. This can be a messy job, so it is important to wear safety gear, such as a dust mask and goggles. Protect what you want to keep. Buy some RamBoard floor coverings and the right tape to protect your floors. Below are a couple links for what i use all the itme. Once the old cabinets are demolished, you can start building new ones.

When rebuilding your cabinets, you can choose from a variety of materials, such as wood, plywood, or MDF. I chose to use birch plywood for my cabinets. Birch plywood is a strong and durable material that is also relatively inexpensive. And lets be honest this is by far the best and most popular option, especially for kitchen cabinets. In this step you want to keep it simple. Simple carcasses with shelf pins is always the way to go, I use Kreg jigs to accomplish this every time. They save you time and money.

Making inset doors

There are two main types of cabinet door styles: inset and overlay. Inset doors are flush with the face of the cabinet frame. Overlay doors overlap the face of the cabinet frame. The client, an interior designer chose the inset doors for this project. Inset doors are a more traditional style that can give your kitchen a more elegant look. The toughest part about inset doors is getting the even reveal between the door and the face frame equal all the way around. I've heard a lot of opinions about the amount of reveal here but somewhere between 1/8 of an inch and 3/16 of an inch is best. On this project i went with 3/16.

Reconfiguring the drawers

The next step is to reconfigure the drawers. If your old cabinets had traditional drawers, you may want to consider updating them to under mount drawers. Under mount drawers are installed below the cabinet frame, so they create a clean and uninterrupted look.

Spraying the cabinets

Once the cabinets are rebuilt, you can spray them. Spraying is the best way to get a smooth and professional finish on your cabinets. There are two main types of sprayers: airless and HVLP. Airless sprayers are more powerful, but they can be more difficult to use. HVLP sprayers are less powerful, but they are easier to use and produce a finer finish.

Sanding and finishing the floors

Finally, I sanded and finished the floors. This is a great way to update the look of your kitchen and make it more durable. I used a water-based polyurethane finish for my floors. This is a durable finish that is easy to maintain. Here I used a handheld sander because the space was only 800 or so square feet. But the sander that I used and linked below has a dual mode function. In turbo mode it is an absolute beast and really takes off some material! For a larger space you may want to think about renting a floor sander. The sanding took about a half day and then staining took an hour to do and then dried overnight. The next day I applied finish and allowed it to dry and then applied a second coat to dry over that night. So, all in this step takes about 2 days for 800 to 1000 square feet.
